OmniLegis

AI-Powered Laws App
OmniLegis is an AI-powered legal information app that helps users understand German and EU law through plain-language summaries. The app uses geolocation to recommend region-specific laws and delivers information through a conversational AI chat interface. Designed with a dark UI theme and clear source references, the product balances transparency, simplicity, and trust. Successfully reached over 5K downloads.

The Challenge

Understanding legal information is notoriously difficult, especially for those unfamiliar with legal systems, technical language, or jurisdictional differences. Most existing tools focus on providing raw content or keyword-based search without simplifying the language or adapting to the user’s region.

The challenge was to create a product that could make legal information understandable and accessible for everyday users while ensuring trust and transparency in AI-generated responses. The UI also had to remain simple, dark-themed by default, and optimized for both mobile and tablet experiences.

My Role

As the sole UX/UI designer, I worked closely with 1 Product Owner, 1 PO Assistant, and 4–5 developers.
My responsibilities included:

  • Designing the end-to-end user flow and translating requirements into clear UI structures.
  • Creating the AI chat interface and summary presentation logic.
  • Ensuring source transparency by embedding legal references into all AI responses.
  • Collaborating with developers during weekly sprints to refine interactions.

1. Research & Market Analysis

(Research conducted by the PO team; I translated insights into design)
We reviewed multiple AI-driven legal tools across regions including the US, UK, Germany, and global platforms. While many services assist with legal search or document automation, few focus on clarity, localization, and trustworthy AI delivery.

Observed Issues in Existing Tools
  • Generic keyword-based search with static articles
  • No adaptation based on local jurisdiction
  • Lack of plain-language legal summaries
  • Minimal transparency on AI sources

2. Problem

Legal content is notoriously difficult to understand, especially for those unfamiliar with technical language, jurisdictional differences, or legal systems in Germany.

Key User Pain Points

    1. Complex legal text with no explanation
    2. Unclear which laws apply based on region
    3. AI tools that offer answers without credible sources
    4. Overwhelming UI or legal databases without guidance

    3. Why OmniLegis is Different

OmniLegis was designed to address the gaps found in existing legal information tools, focusing on clarity, localization, and transparency.

Instead of presenting raw legal text or static search results, it provides:

    • Plain-language summaries powered by AI for easy comprehension
    • Region-specific answers based on user location
    • Clear references to original legal sources for trust and verification
    • A conversational interface that reduces friction and complexity

    4. Target Users

I designed with everyday users in mind, people who need to understand legal topics, not just access them.

    5. Design Strategy

This project focused on creating a transparent, simple, and context-aware AI experience.

    Goals and Key Design Decisions:
    • Simplification: Use AI to break down dense legal language into clear summaries.
    • Trust: Every AI response includes references to official legal sources for credibility.
    • Localization: Legal answers adapt automatically to the user’s region using geolocation.
    • Conversational Flow: Replace traditional search with a natural chat-based interface.
    • Engagement: Use subtle background animations during AI processing to show reasoning and keep users engaged.
    • Minimal UI: Avoid traditional clutter like tabs or search bars to maintain focus on conversation.

    6. Key Features

OmniLegis is built around a clean AI chat interface that makes legal information easy to understand and navigate. Each feature is designed to reduce complexity, build user trust, and provide clear references to credible sources. From plain-language summaries to location-based answers, every detail focuses on helping users confidently interact with legal content.

    Plain-Language Summary of Laws
It delivers plain-language summaries, making complex laws like the BGB easy to understand.
It helps users quickly grasp key points and save important articles for later reference.

    Real-Time Topic Suggestion

It suggests related topics as users explore legal questions across areas like tenancy, employment, or consumer rights. It allows users to stay engaged and discover relevant insights with every search.

    Location-based Answer

If the user does not grant location access during the initial setup, the service prompts them for their location when a query requires it. At the end of the conversation, a popup appears asking if the user wants to save this location, simplifying the process by removing the need to navigate to the profile settings for manual updates.

    AI Reasoning Animation

As the AI processes your question, the background animation subtly shifts—visually representing the reasoning process in progress. It helps users understand that the system is actively working to find the most relevant legal information for their query.

    Laws with Categories

It organizes the legal landscape into clear categories.
It allows users find what they need faster by browsing curated sections tailored to everyday needs.

    7. Reflection & Next Steps

This project helped me grow in:

    • Leading the end-to-end product design process from concept planning to final handoff
    • Collaborating closely with developers and POs as the sole designer, translating technical requirements into intuitive UI/UX
    • Designing AI experiences grounded in clarity and trust
    • Communicating dense information in a digestible way
    • Balancing platform adaptation (mobile/tablet) with visual consistency

    If extended further, I would:

    • Integrate user feedback prompts like “Was this helpful?”
    • Explore topic-based personalization
