tripee
“How could XR technology play a role in the entertainment industry, such as the travel industry?”
“How can we connect the excitement of travel from the planning stage to the actual journey through the XR?”
“How can we connect the excitement of travel from the planning stage to the actual journey through the XR?”
Tripee consists of four main stages and will be together from the beginning to the end of the trip.
In VR, users collect travel information and make plans, and in actual trips, users can check and record their plans via mobile devices.
The excitement of the theme park
Since both travel and amusement parks excite people, we chose the theme park concept.
The characteristics of theme parks, where you can experience various attractions, are similar to travel, where you can choose from different destinations.
Hopee, balloon shaped companion, represents user’s trip type. It helps users to find appropriate information in the ‘square’. Also, it collects the selected trip information as badges.
Selected trip information is saved as 4 types of badges : Landmark, activity, food and accommodation. Users can check the content, and collect them to make a trip plan.
Explore
Explore trip information in the ‘square,’ a theme park concept open space.
Users can communicate, share, experience, and collect detailed trip information about various countries.
Talk freely with other users. Share best locations, foods, tips and etc. Be close friends with those who have the same hopee, learn and share more about your taste.
Immersively experience popular locations or landmarks while on a ride. Pass through the landmarks to see what others reccommend. Simply sit and enjoy the destinations.
View and collect various information as badges. Go through reviews, images, etc. Add the information to your list and it will turn into badges that hopee will carry along.
Plan
Share trip information with your crews.
Check various badges and preview your trip with the best plan.
Poke the globe to set the target country for your trip.Selected country will be created into a 3d stylized map with some basic information about the trip.
Hover to see simple information about the badge. Pinch or throw to share detailed information with the crew. Move the badges out of the map to exclude.
Starting from the airport, the optimized route shows up based on the badges in map. Check various information such as budget, number of steps, weather, airline ticket.
Trip
Check the best trip plan on mobile.
Essential information and preferred route will be transferredinto the mobile app.
Get plans made by VR through mobile.
Users can check information about places organized by category and date.
Enjoy the trip according to your plan.
Users can easily find places through AR navigation, and can also get recommendations for similar places around them.
Archive
Create reviews, and keep track of images, videos about your trip.
Take a picture and archive your memories by selecting your current location.
These reviews will turn into new badges for other users to explore.
Our Process
Survey
1. Anticipation for travel tends to decrease the most during the planning stage.
2. The importance of connecting the travel planning with the actual trip.
Competitor Analysis
We analyzed the strengths and weaknesses of four existing platforms for travel planning to derive benchmarking points.
Besides the benchmarking points, since all are mobile and web-based services, we faced the challenge of how to apply them in XR technology.
In-depth Interview
From the in-depth interviews, we organized the information using affinity diagrams to identify pain points and key features.
1. Different travel styles
Showing each person's travel style without talking
2. Difficulty of planning routeProviding optimized routes based on where users choose to go
3. Unable to view multiple pieces of information at onceUtilizing the advantages of VR to display information using the XYZ axis
Prototyping
To develop a VR service, we conducted interaction studies using paper mockups.
This approach allowed us to experiment with and refine the user interactions in a tangible way before moving to digital development.
It provided a hands-on method to visualize and test the functionality and user experience of our VR concept effectively.
VR Hand Interaction Guideline
To enhance user comfort and intuition, we developed guidelines for VR hand interactions that do not require controllers.
These guidelines were distributed to users prior to their VR device experiences to facilitate a smoother and more intuitive engagement.
